Finding affordable home repair can be challenging. Oftentimes people find themselves locked into a contract they weren’t even aware they were entering. Its important as a homeowner to realize how repair services work before even getting a repairman out to your house. Here are a few important questions you can ask your prospective repairman:

1. Do you offer a free estimate? Will you diagnose at no charge?

Most reputable companies will come out and take a look at your issue(s) free of charge. However, there may be times when diagnosing the issue will be a long process and a fee may be involved. A good repairman should make you aware of these charges before they begin, but its better to ask beforehand than to be surprised by a service fee later.

2. How long is the wait before you can complete the estimated work?

There are some handyman businesses that are booked out a few days and some are booked out a few weeks. Others can do the work for you right then and there. Before you have a repairman out for an estimate, get an idea of his work load and make sure it aligns with your needs. If your issue is urgent, you need to find a handyman with immediate availability. Just know, if your repair is urgent and you choose a handyman with a long waiting list, your issues may get worse or become more complicated. Which could mean more work and more money down the road.

3. How do you charge? Is it hourly or by job?

Oftentimes you will hear that the rate is dependent upon the work. Some jobs may be relatively simple but time consuming. Others may be complicated, require special tools and a higher degree of skill. These are all things your repairman will take into consideration when putting together an estimate, whether they charge hourly or by the job.
